The Grampians are Gariwerd to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali peoples: a run of tilted sandstone ranges rising straight out of the plains of western Victoria. Along their tops runs the Grampians Peaks Trail, about 160 km from north to south. This walk takes four of its finest sections, without a tent or a hire car.

You stay in two places. Halls Gap, the village in the middle of the ranges, is your base for three nights, and the cars run you to each trailhead and back. On day 4 you move to Dunkeld, at the southern end of the range, and the last walk finishes there on foot.

The days are short but not flat. Every Peaks Trail day climbs 450–700 m, on rock steps, slabs and sandstone ledges, and the descents are rough underfoot. Day 3 over Mount Rosea is the longest, at about 12.5 km.

Distances and climbs on this page are approximate. They are rounded from our route lines.

You get here without driving: a train and a coach from Melbourne to Halls Gap, and a coach and a train back from Dunkeld. We book your rooms, the cars and the tickets, and send the routes to your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you walk 10–13 km on hilly paths at home, you will manage. Each trail day climbs 450–700 m, on rock steps and slabs, and the way down is steep and stony. Fitness 2 of 5, technical 3 of 5. Day 3, over Mount Rosea, is the longest at about 12.5 km.

No. You travel from Melbourne to Halls Gap by train and coach, about four hours, both run by V/Line: on weekdays you leave Southern Cross at 08:36 and arrive at 12:51. At the end, the coach leaves Dunkeld at 17:20 (17:14 at weekends) and you are back in Melbourne at about 21:00. Every trailhead is reached by car with a local driver.

Only a day pack. Your luggage stays in Halls Gap for three nights. On day 4 it rides with you in the car to Dunkeld and waits at your accommodation while you walk over Signal Peak and Mount Abrupt.

Breakfast is included where your stay serves it. Not every stay on this walk does: we tell you which ones before you book, and they are marked in your guidebook. Where breakfast is not served, we try to arrange a packed lunch for you instead, if the stay or a café nearby can make one.

For lunch and dinner, Halls Gap has several cafés and restaurants a short walk from the motel; Dunkeld has the Royal Mail Hotel's restaurants, plus bakeries and cafés. There are no shops in the park, so buy anything else for the trail the evening before.

Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). Spring brings wildflowers and orchids to the southern peaks; autumn is cooler and steadier.

We do not sell December to February: summer days can pass 40 °C, and on Catastrophic fire-danger days the park closes. June to August is cold and wet on the summits.

On a Catastrophic fire-danger day the park closes, and coaches may not run. We watch the forecast with you and move the walk or the travel day. The official warnings are on VicEmergency.

No. The full trail is about 160 km, takes 13 days and sleeps in hike-in campsites. You walk four of its sections: from Halls Gap over the Pinnacle, over Mount Rosea, over Signal Peak and Mount Abrupt, and the final one over Mount Sturgeon to the trail's end in Dunkeld. Parks Victoria has the full route.

Patchy, and none in many valleys. The routes in the app work offline, so download them in Halls Gap. Tell your accommodation where you are walking each day.
